Rita Kaseman stands in formal hunting attire with her beloved Butterfly on a sunny day in late fall. A fox at the lower left of the painting scurries past her. Just barely seen is the lead hound at the top of the path behind her. The Blue Ridge mountains complete the scene.
6' wide by 2' tall, this oil on canvas (detail shown) is a Snowy Owl, one of the largest owl species. This female is ascending the tundra, talons extended in anticipation of catching her target, likely a lemming. It was a joy painting this favorite bird of the client. It now hangs in their great room, hung 8 feet high on the medium tan walls. The background is a cloudy grey blue, a tone my client requested to complement her wall cover and decor.
Greetings, and welcome to my site.
Originally from New Orleans, I fell in love with horses and equine portraiture as a young girl, inheriting my artistic talent from my paternal grandmother. A late bloomer, I did not start painting until I was 35 and am essentially self-taught. My technique is described as representational realism.
It was natural that I specialize in equine, pet portraits, and sporting art, but when I moved to Middleburg, Virginia, in 2011 after being in the Bluegrass of Kentucky for 25 years, mounted foxhunter portraits, foxes, and foxhounds were added to my repertoire as well as the traditional human portrait.
Most of my work is commissioned (contracted) with the client. In the initial conversations, I will gather the necessary details regarding the subject, reference photographs, background, purpose of the painting, where it may hang, and offer my opinions and suggestions to produce the best painting possible.
I use the finest professional grade oils, mediums, and linen for my work, and offer a wide variety of sizes. My canvases are hand built and I can custom stretch a canvas to suit the image or composition, or place where it will be displayed.
Once contracted and a deposit is placed on account, the work is put on my calendar, and depending upon size and complexity, can take a couple of weeks to several months to complete after the painting has been started. Digital images are sent regularly to the client. Shipping and other costs are reimbursed to the artist and paid with the balance before shipping. The painting is shipped unframed and ready to frame. If necessary, at a later date, the painting should be varnished by a professional. Instructions will be provided to the client. Varnishing is an essential last step to the painting process, especially in the classic realism genre where details and depth of tone are brought back to their original lustrous state.

I do not have an open "studio" per se but do welcome visits by appointment. But on occasion, I do have samples to show.
